The short way is to boil the wood, let it sit an hour or so in the water, then reboil and repeat until it has stopped leeching.
The addition of wood such as bogwood will help to buffer the pH to a lower value naturally.
Usually drift wood come from salt water, and becomes much more buoyant as it absorbs salt. It will sometimes rot more easily than bog wood, but if it is salt water drift wood, the salt acts as a preservative for the wood, much like the tannin does for the bog wood.

However, tannins are usually acidic. They will slowly lower the pH of the water, which can ultimately harm the fish.
More importantly, boiling sterilizes the driftwood, killing algal or fungal spores that can take hold once introduced into the aquarium with the driftwood. Boiling the driftwood for 1-2 hours will sterilize the driftwood. Once the driftwood has been properly prepared, it is ready for placement.
Boiling driftwood for 1-2 hours based on the size lets it entirely sterilized and ready to use inside the aquarium. In general, boiling wood for a long time helps balance the pH level, builds the ideal environment for the aquatic ecosystem, and removes the tannic acid produced by the wood.

If you can, boil your driftwood for at least an hour and let cool. If your driftwood is too large to boil, submerge it in a bucket with a 5% bleach solution for 10–15 minutes.
