discoloration caused by the tannins will not harm your aquarium inhabitants, but it will lower the pH slightly over time.
Activated carbon can typically only adsorb very large molecular weight tannins. Therefore, it is the least broadly applicable treatment option. However, it benefits from typically lower total system costs, and lower maintenance (as compared to ion exchange).
48 -72 hours
Tannins, although they can not look particularly attractive, are actually quite beneficial for fish. For this reason I would only ever recommend bogwood bought from a pet store to be lightly washed and then soaked for 48 -72 hours so that when you come to put it into the aquarium that the bogwood doesn’t float.
So, how long to boil driftwood to remove tannins? Medium-sized driftwood consumes 30 minutes-2 hours based on age, moisture level, size, shape, and type. Larger driftwoods can take hours to several days to remove tannins entirely.
Tannins are extracted with water alone or by mixing with other solvents like methanol, ethanol, acetone, NaOH.
Adding a little plain ol‘ household vinegar to your water bath can also help remove tannins! For really stubborn tannin stains, especially old tannin stains, you may need to use bleach to remove them completely, but try a few applications of water with vinegar and detergent first.
These stains are usually water-soluble (unless in combination with other substances) but can be difficult to remove if not treated immediately. Most pigment and tanin-based stains can be removed with minimal fuss if you deal with them quickly enough.
So, to get rid of the tannin coloration is relatively straightforward, as we’ve discussed before. Just do a few small water changes and employ some activated carbon, or my personal fave chemical filtration media, Seachem Purigen, and you’ll see your water clear up within a few days in most cases.
Tannins cause the brownish or yellowish tint of aquarium water. The discoloration of water is not a significant problem – it will not harm the fish. However, tannins are usually acidic. They will slowly lower the pH of the water, which can ultimately harm the fish.
Are tannins dangerous for my fish or shrimp? No, they are not. On the contrary, tannins are generally going to be beneficial to your animals, but you also need to understand them and the effect that they have before introducing things like driftwood to your tank.
Catappa leaves will take 3-5 days to sink, after this they will release most of their tannins and start breaking down. Once sunken, they usually last for 1-2 months in your aquarium before breaking down.
Remember to soak the wood repeatedly in boiling water for at least 4 hours or until the water runs clear.

All natural wood leaches tannins, which discolor water and reduce pH levels. To minimize this effect, soak wood in a separate container, and change water daily to remove excess tannins. The wood will be ready when the water color goes from dark brown to a very light.
If you accidentally added too many Indian almond leaves to your tank, don’t be concerned as there should be no negative effects on your fish unless you’ve added too many leaves to the point that the pH levels get extremely low, which is very unlikely to happen.
If the dried leaves are very dusty or dirty, you can gently rinse them in water first, but the catappa leaves sold by Aquarium Co-Op are clean enough that we just drop them directly into the fish tank. They usually float for the first 3-7 days, so if it bothers you, weigh them down with a rock or decoration.
I like the idea of steeping leaves in boiling water for 10 minutes or so, which helps soften them up a bit and „sterilizes“ them to some extent, without „cracking off“ all of the beneficial tannins bound up in their tissues.
