The average period a wood requires to sink can range anywhere from two days to two weeks for highly porous woods. It may even need up to a month or two until even the most porous driftwood submerges completely.
Store bought wood should also be soaked to see if it is going to leech the tannins into your tank.To get rid of them soak or boil changing the water often until the water stays clear. Make sure its very clean of debris.
As the wood sits in the water, it will release what is called tannins. The tannins won’t harm anything, but it does make the water cloudy, so it’s best to get rid of it as much as possible before you put it in your fish tank.
Boiling driftwood for 1-2 hours based on the size lets it entirely sterilized and ready to use inside the aquarium. In general, boiling wood for a long time helps balance the pH level, builds the ideal environment for the aquatic ecosystem, and removes the tannic acid produced by the wood.
Remember to collect wood from rural areas and make sure you have permission. Look for dry pieces with no mould, rot or fungus. It’s also fine to take “cuttings” from living trees but again, make sure you have permission or make friends with a tree surgeon.

The presence of tannins is one cause of brown or yellow water that is usually not a problem. Tannins are present in driftwood, and over time they will leach into the aquarium water, staining it yellow to brown. Tannins lower the pH of the water and soften it. For some fish, this may be desirable and even recommended.
Wood is organic and that means it will break down over time. How quickly it breaks down will depend on a number of factors, but on average, most driftwood will begin to show signs of deterioration as early as 2 years after being submerged and may need replacing after roughly 5 years.
Mix a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water and fill a large container so that there is enough solution to completely submerge your driftwood. Place your driftwood in the solution. Soak your driftwood for 3 or 4 days, changing out the disinfecting solution each day.
Add 1 part bleach to 9 parts cold water in a shallow pan. Soak the driftwood for up to a half hour. Longer soaking periods allow the bleach to penetrate all the wood. Rinse it off with clear water, and set it outside where you can add insecticide to the wood.
Drain the water, run each piece of driftwood under fresh water to remove any soda, and let dry outside (12-24 hours, depending on the size). (NOTE: If you’re impatient, you can place your driftwood on a tray lined with parchment paper and dry in your oven).
One coat should be enough, but if your driftwood is extremely dried out, you can apply a second or third coat after the oil completely dries. If you plan to place your driftwood outdoors, I recommend reapplying the teak oil every six months.

Pre-soaking driftwood in hot water for a few hours will help remove a lot of tannins before you put the wood into your aquarium. You can repeat the process several times until the wood has lost the majority of its tannins.
Add 3 or 4 teaspoons of baking soda to the water in the container. This raises the pH of the water in the container. The alkaline water draws out the tannins in the wood.
